NextEra Energy operates as a vertically integrated utility company engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electric power across North America. The company generates electricity from a diversified portfolio of sources including wind, solar, nuclear, and natural gas facilities, and also operates battery storage assets. Beyond generation, NextEra owns and operates transmission and distribution infrastructure, manages natural gas pipelines, and participates in energy trading and commodity markets. The company serves approximately 6 million customer accounts representing roughly 12 million people, primarily concentrated on the east and lower west coasts of Florida.

The business is organized into two primary segments: Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), which handles regulated utility operations in Florida, and NEER (NextEra Energy Resources), which manages wholesale generation and merchant energy assets across the United States and Canada. As of December 31, 2025, NextEra's generating portfolio encompassed approximately 35,963 megawatts of net capacity. The company operates approximately 93,000 circuit miles of transmission and distribution lines supported by 932 substations.

NextEra employs approximately 17,400 full-time employees and maintains headquarters in Juno Beach, Florida. The company was originally incorporated as FPL Group in Florida in 1925 and adopted its current name in 2010.
