The company operates primarily through two segments: Cloud and Edge, which delivers voice over internet protocol, voice over long-term evolution, voice over 5G, and unified communications products for private, public, and hybrid cloud deployments; and IP Optical Networks, which supplies switching, routing, and optical transport solutions for 5G, distributed cloud, and carrier networks.

The Cloud and Edge segment serves data centers, enterprise premises, and service provider networks with session border controllers, signaling products, call controllers, media gateways, and application servers. The IP Optical Networks segment targets utilities, government, defense, financial services, transportation, and education sectors alongside service providers and enterprises, offering mobile-backhaul, metro and edge aggregation, core networking, and data center interconnect solutions.

Ribbon Communications operates globally across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific region. The company was incorporated in Delaware and is headquartered in Plano, Texas. Formerly known as Sonus Networks, Inc., it adopted its current name in November 2017 following a corporate rebrand and has been in operation since its founding in 1997.
