Additionally, the company purchases, transports, distributes, and sells natural gas, with operations that include pipeline development, storage facilities, and interstate natural gas pipeline infrastructure.

The business is organized into two primary segments: Regulated Electric Utility and Regulated Natural Gas Utility. Beyond core utility operations, Xcel Energy maintains nonregulated investments in rental housing, energy technology companies, and community solar garden projects. The company engages in wholesale commodity trading and transmission service resale activities.

With approximately 11,534 full-time employees, Xcel Energy operates across a multi-state service territory spanning the Great Plains, Upper Midwest, and portions of the Southwest. The company was originally incorporated in 1909 as Northern States Power Company and maintains its incorporation in Minnesota.
